From the Pastor’s Desk

“Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their
flock by night. And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord
shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. Then the angel said to them, “Do not be
afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For there is
born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.”
Living in the fields, in other words camping out with the sheep. What do you do when you’re
camping out at night? Sit around the campfire and talk about a variety of things. These were
Jewish shepherds, so perhaps they were talking about the prophecies, maybe even the many
prophecies about the Messiah. Think about how cool that would have been…talking about the
Messiah’s coming, something the faithful had been anticipating for centuries and all the sudden
an angel appears and scares them nearly to death. After the long-awaited announcement from
the singular angel (which was impressive enough) a whole multitude, perhaps all the heavenly
host appears to the shepherds to proclaim Christ’s incarnation. From the angel’s perspective,
this was a universe shaking event, to the shepherds and the parents, the hope of redemption.
May that same hope bring you joy in this joy-filled time of the year!
A Blessed Christmas to All!
