“If the Son therefore shall make you free, you shall be free indeed.”
I love these United States of America, and I want to wish you a very Happy Independence Day. We
celebrate the colonists rebelling against a tyrant named King George who was not allowing the colonists
to govern themselves and inflicting upon them unfair taxes. It wasn’t even taxing, that was the main
problem, though that was irritating, it was taxation without representation that really got under the skin
of the patriots. These early Americans wanted the freedom to pursue life, liberty and the pursuit of
happiness but the reach of the British king was smothering that pursuit.
Currently, we actually pay a far greater percentage in taxes and have as much if not more governmental
intrusion into our lives than was present in 1776. So…how can we be free when we under such human
authority? Jesus answers this very pertinent question in John 8:36 as quoted above. Our true freedom is
only found in Jesus; He is our Redeemer and our King. The difference with this King is that He laid down
His life for you and me to have true freedom in Him. As we celebrate July 4 th , let us also celebrate our
individual freedom that is found in Christ!
God’s Blessings!
